According to reports from The Times, Pep Guardiola could offer Arsenal captain Mikel Arteta a shock coaching role at Manchester City in the summer.

The Spaniard looks set to leave the Emirates upon the expiration of his contract at the end of the season. A transfer to West Ham has been mooted by the tabloids but now 33 years of age and suffering from a recurring calf problem – which has seen him manage just eight substitute appearances in the Premier League so far this season – the Gunners skipper could decide to hang up his boots.

Should that be the case, The Times report that incoming City manager Pep Guardiola will consider offering the retiring playmaker a coaching role at the Etihad. Arteta, a Barcelona product, is said to be good friends with the former Nou Camp boss and his long-term fitness coach Lorenzo Buenaventura.

The former Everton star has already started training for his coaches badges, working with Arsenal’s U13 squad and the Wales U16s, and his vast experience in the English top flight is seen as a potentially huge asset for Guardiola, being now into his 13th Premier League campaign.
