Renato Sanches

According to reports from The Sun, Manchester United have a ‘gentleman’s agreement’ in place to sign Benfica wonder kid Renato Sanches during the summer transfer window.

The 18-year-old has registered just 16 league outings in the Primeira Liga, scoring twice, but is already being compared to Brazilian great Ronaldinho and attracting significant interest from England’s biggest clubs.

Indeed, Arsenal were linked with a late swoop for the Portugal U19 during the January transfer window and scouts from the north London club, Liverpool and Manchester City reportedly ran the rule over him during a 2-1 defeat to FC Porto earlier this month.

But it appears long-term admirers Manchester United have now beaten rival suitors to the midfielder’s signature, with The Sun – who cite reports from Portuguese publication Record – claiming they’ve reached a ‘gentleman’s agreement’ to sign him during the summer.

The ultimate fee is yet to be finalised but Benfica are expecting an upfront £31million sum alongside an extra £8million in performance-related add-ons. An outrageous fee for a teenager, but nonetheless a significant reduction on his £62million release clause.
