Chelsea & Man United set for transfer war over Puskas-winning midfielder

|

James Rodriguez

According to reports from Goal and Mirror Football respectively, Chelsea and Manchester United are both targeting Real Madrid attacking midfielder James Rodriguez.

The Colombian international moved to the Bernabeu after claiming the Golden Boot with six goals at the 2014 World Cup, including a strike against Uruguay that went on to win the prestigious Puskas award.

But he hasn’t quite hit the heights expected with Los Blancos. Injuries have curtailed the midfielder to just six La Liga starts this season and reports from Spain claim he’s now looking to leave the capital after growing disillusioned with life under Rafa Benitez.

Citing Fichajes, Goal put Chelsea in the frame to snap up the South American, with interim manager Guus Hiddink keen to add a new playmaker to his squad for the second half of the season. It follows reports from last week suggesting an incredible swap deal involving struggling Blues talisman Eden Hazard.

Mirror Football, on the other hand, claim Manchester United could be about to swoop for Rodriguez, after Spanish journalist Jose Luiz Sanchez told television show El Chiringuito that the Red Devils are “very interested” in his services.

Red Devils executive Ed Woodward has made a policy of signing high-profile players in a bid to aid commercial revenue and Rodriguez certainly falls into that category, as one of the biggest stars of South American football who became a global sensation at the last World Cup.
