Prepare your Arsene Wenger hate mail for next season

According to reports from The Metro yesterday afternoon, Arsenal have beaten Manchester United to the signing of Benfica goalkeeper Joao Virginia.

The 15 year-old impressed during a trial with United earlier this year and it’s believed the Red Devils were keen to acquire his services permanently amid a goalkeeping nightmare at Old Trafford.

Victor Valdes and David De Gea are both expected to be sold this summer, leaving bosman signing Sergio Romero as the only experienced No.1 in Louis van Gaal’s squad.

But according to The Metro, who cite reports from Portugal, it’s Premier League rivals Arsenal who have now signed the Portuguese prodigy.

Although the goalkeeper’s transfer fee is yet to be revealed, Virginia has reportedly agreed a four-year contract with the north London outfit.

The news comes amid a youth team recruitment drive from the Gunners; the Benfica starlet follows Ajax forward Donyell Malen and Arles-Avignon youngster Ismael Bennacer, who completed Emirates moves last week.
