According to reports from The Express this morning, Newcastle are targeting Netherlands international Georginio Wijnaldum but face competition from four Premier League sides.
The attacking midfielder’s performances for PSV have verged upon talismanic since signing from Feyenoord in 2011, going on to claim 56 goals and 23 assists in 152 appearances across all competitions.
He also impressed for Oranje at last summer’s World Cup, featuring prominently as Louis van Gaal’s side reached the semi-finals, and claimed the Dutch Footballer of the Year award for the 2014/15 season.
According to The Express, Magpies boss Steve McClaren has made the 24 year-old his priority target for the summer window and is prepared to meet the Eindhoven outfit’s £14million valuation.
They also claim Everton are looking to hijack the deal as it draws closer, but there could be more sizable competition for the Toon gaffer to worry about; namely Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United, who are all listed as long-term admirers.
Whether Newcastle’s pursuit of the 5 foot 9 midfielder triggers a revival of interest from the aforementioned clubs remains to be seen.
