Chelsea keeping Spurs target in transfer limbo

|

Toby Alderweireld

According to reports from The Telegraph this afternoon, Chelsea will keep Atletico Madrid waiting on their offer to swap Toby Alderweireld for Filipe Luis.

The Belgium international impressed on loan at Southampton this season, making 26 league appearances and playing a pivotal role in Ronald Koeman’s side claiming the second-best goals conceded column in the Premier League.

Chelsea, Manchester City, the Saints and Spurs are all believed to be targeting the 26 year-old, but Atletico offered him to the Premier League champions some time ago – as This Is Futbol revealed in May.

News emerged this morning of a potential swap deal involving £16million signing Filipe Luis, who spent four years at Vincente Calderon before moving to Stamford Bridge last summer – where he has since gone on to manage just nine Premier League starts.

But according to The Telegraph, Mourinho is reluctant to sanction the deal without pursuing other options first – namely Everton prodigy John Stones and Real Madrid star Raphael Varane, who are both seen as long-term successors to John Terry.

That hesitation could cost the west Londoners, however; as This Is Futbol revealed last week, Alderweireld intends to resolve his future as soon as possible to ensure a full pre-season ahead of the 2015/16 campaign.
