According to reports from The Birmingham Mail this morning, Aston Villa captain Ron Vlaar will be offered a contract extension in the coming weeks.
The 30 year-old has been continuously linked with a move away from Villa Park ever since his impressive performances for Louis van Gaal’s Netherlands outfit at last summer’s World Cup.
That’s seen him linked with Manchester United by publications such as The Daily Star, who also moot Arsenal and Southampton as potential suitors.
The Premier League trio are keen to snap up an experienced centre-back at a discounted rate, with Vlaar’s current contract set to expire at the end of the campaign.
The 6 foot 2 defender looked destined to leave the Birmingham outfit a few weeks ago, with contract negotiations yet to get underway as late as mid-May – as reported by Mirror Football.
But according to reports this morning, Villains boss Tim Sherwood will be offering Vlaar extended terms.
Speaking after Aston Villa’s crushing 4-0 defeat to Arsenal in Saturday’s FA Cup final, Sherwood told reporters; “I told Ron I thought he was good to be honest. “We were beaten 4-0 and I thought Jores Okore and Vlaar were very, very good.
“I’ve told him I want him to stay so we’re going to have a chat with him as well.”
Asked if Vlaar will be offered a new deal, Sherwood added: “Yeah.”
