According to reports from Mirror Football this afternoon, Everton are set to make a shock bid for former Arsenal skipper Thomas Vermaelen in the coming transfer window.

The 29 year-old made 150 appearances during his five seasons with the north London club but found himself ostracised from the starting Xi for large parts of the 2013/14 campaign, heralding a £15million move to Barcelona last August.

Due to a spate of recurring injury problems, however, which also affected his playing time at Arsenal last term, the centre-back is still waiting upon his first team debut for the Nou Camp outfit. Having struggled to settle both on and off the field, he’s widely expected to leave the Catalan giants at the end of the season.

Mirror Football moot Everton as surprise suitors, a day following claims from The Daily Mail that Toffees centre-backs Sylvain Distin and Antolin Alcaraz are both expected to leave Goodison Park this summer, upon the expiration of their contracts.
