Memphis Depay

According to reports from The Express this morning, Liverpool will contest Manchester United for Memphis Depay’s signature this summer – the PSV Eindhoven winger often compared to Cristano Ronaldo.

This Is Futbol informed you yesterday morning that Red Devils scouts were planning to run the rule over the Eredivisie star last night as he took on Spain with the Netherlands, but it appears Liverpool have been watching over Depay for a significantly longer period.

As The Express explains, Dutch football expert Mark van der Kraan told sports radio station talkSPORT this morning; “People think Louis van Gaal will take him, but the fact that Liverpool scouts are in Eindhoven almost every week to watch the player signals to me that Liverpool are a strong contender for the boy.”

The United link stems from the 21 year-old’s impressive performances at the 2014 World Cup, scoring twice and producing one assist, under van Gaal’s leadership.

Since, the explosive wideman has gone on to score 23 goals in 32 appearances, including 17 strikes in the Dutch top flight, suggesting he’s more than ready to ply his trade at a higher level – something PSV boss Phillip Cocu has also confirmed via a report from Goal.com.

Although his connections with LVG give the Red Devils the upper hand, the sheer desire Liverpool have shown in monitoring Depay’s progress could convince him to move to Merseyside this summer instead.

For all this Man’s undoubted talent, the first criteria that should be established is whether or not the lad WANTS to be a United Player! There MUST be a burning desire to want to perform at our Club, otherwise we are wasting our time. Giggs, Scholes, the Nevilles, Butt, Beckham, Keane, Schmeichal, Irwin, etc…all “bled” to be United Players and they should be held up as the benchmark for all new recruits to the Club. We want Players with the right single-minded attitude who burn to win, not some fly-by-nighters there for the money!
