Ashley Williams

According to reports from Mirror Football this weekend, Liverpool will revive their interest in Swansea centre-back Ashley Williams this summer – two years after first courting his signature.

Brendan Rodgers tried to sign the Wales centre-back during summer 2013, a year after he’d left the Liberty Stadium for Anfield himself, but the Merseysiders ended up buying then-PSG star Mamadou Sakho for £15million instead – as well as Portugal U21 Tiago Ilori.

The Liverpool gaffer is keen to improve his options at centre-half this summer, having utilised a back three for the second half of the season, and Williams’ prominent form of late has grabbed his attention.

The powerful defender has averaged 1.1 tackles, 2.6 interceptions, 10.3 clearances and 2.2 aerial duels per match this term, and is yet to miss a second of the Welsh outfit’s Premier League campaign.

Currently serving as Swansea captain, however, with three years remaining on his contract, it will take a significant fee to convince Garry Monk’s side to sell.
