The rivalry between Manchester United and Liverpool is so fierce that the last player to move directly between both northwest clubs was Phil Chisnall – all the way back in 1964.

But according to reports from The Express this morning, the two clubs could break that half-century, unofficial transfer embargo if the former moves for the latter’s talismanic contract rebel Raheem Sterling this summer.

As This Is Futbol informed you yesterday, uncertainty over the 2014 Golden Boy award-winner’s future – having recently rejected the opportunity to extend his Anfield contract past summer 2017 – has attracted interest from two of the Premier League’s top clubs, Chelsea and Arsenal – whom the Reds are facing this afternoon.

But now the Red Devils are keen to get in on the act too and we could see them launch a bid for the England international this summer.

Whether they’d be prepared to meet Liverpool’s apparent demand of £50million for Sterling’s services however – and whether Liverpool would actually let their biggest prospect move to Old Trafford – remains to be seen.
