Could Manchester United ever re-sign Paul Pogba?

Paul Pogba 1Given how bad things are going for Manchester United at the moment, I wouldn’t be surprised if Louis Van Gaal and co. are already drawing up their summer transfer plans. It certainly looks like everyone associated with the club is. Check out these quotes, courtesy of Roy Keane.

The former United great has a target in mind for The Red Devils: ‘I think that United should sign Paul Pogba, for they need a presence and physical player in midfield. Pogba knows the league, is big and strong and is playing brilliantly for Juventus. People say United can’t get Pogba, but they should try.’ (Source: The Metro)

I have little doubt that Paul Pogba would be a good fit for any Premier League side. He’s a world class midfielder, who has all the energy and drive necessary to excel in English football. If he were to move back to England, I’m sure he’d leave plenty of opposition midfielders on their ass.

To say that Manchester United should try to sign Paul Pogba is all well and good, but it’s important to be realistic. The Frenchman didn’t exactly leave Manchester United in the best of terms, did he?

Sir Alex Ferguson couldn’t find space for him in his team and didn’t take kindly to Pogba kicking up a fuss. He was shipped out to Juventus, where his career has really taken off, but it wouldn’t surprise me if he still bore some kind of resentment towards his former employer.

Then there’s his price-tag. According to the aforementioned source, a fee for Pogba could ‘surpass’ £80m. That would make him one of the most expensive footballers in the world. Can The Red Devils really afford to shell out that much cash after they spent so much cash during the last transfer window?

That remains to be seen. Like Keane, I’m hopeful that this deal could go through, but I won’t hold my breath.

What’s your take? Is Paul Pogba still a viable option for The Red Devils? Should they look at other more realistic signings?
