gundogan1Manchester United won’t be as busy this summer as they were last summer, but they won’t be sitting still either. Louis Van Gaal can’t be entirely happy with his current options.

Whilst he’s been caught out from a tactical perspective on a few occasions, he’s also been let down by his players. In particular, he’s lacking dynamism in the centre of the park. He clearly doesn’t trust Ander Hererra. Nobody knows where Juan Mata fits into this team. Marouane Fellaini is too versatile for his own good.

What The Red Devils really need is a player who can break up play, win the ball back and carry a threat when he moves forward. Manchester United need an all rounder. This must explain why they continue to pick up links to Roma’s Kevin Strootman.

Well, according to The Metro, Louis Van Gaal is now ready to switch transfer targets. The source suggests that The Red Devils are now ‘closing in’ on a deal to sign Borussia Dortmund’s combatitive midfielder, Ilkay Gundogan.

The German battler has spent much of the last two seasons out injured, but he’s finally starting to get regular game time once again. It’s been tough for him to find his form in what’s proven to be a fairly average Bundesliga side this season, but he’s getting there. By the time that the summer rolls by, he should be back to his best.

Manchester United will hope that’s the case, any way. The source suggests that Van Gaal is now ‘very confident’ of closing this deal. It looks like The Red Devils are moving quickly with this one.

An article published by The Metro a week or so back suggested that Gundogan would set Manchester United back approximately £18.4m. That’s small change for this club nowadays. Let’s just hope that they’re ready to spring into action as soon as the window slides open.

What’s your take? What does the future hold for Ilkay Gundogan? Is he a good fit for Manchester United?
