Italy v Cameroon - International FriendlyWith Liverpool on the hunt for a long-term replacement for Steven Gerrard, they’d do well to look towards Serie A. It looks like a talented midfielder could be available in the near future.

The man I’m referring to is Claudio Marchisio, who has been with Juventus since 2006. During this time he’s made 319 appearances for his club and he’s earn 54 caps for the Italian international side. He’s known for his ability both on and off the ball. He’s good in possession, but he’s also good at slamming into tackles.

He’s been a one club man throughout his career, but at 29-years-old, the time could be right for him to move on. The Metro quote Marchisio’s agent, who says the following:

‘In my view, the club has other priorities and therefore hasn’t even considered Claudio’s situation, as he has a contract until 2016.’

This means that Marchisio will have a single year left on his current deal by the time the summer rolls by. As a result, Juventus’s negotiatory power will be significantly diminished. If other clubs do want to swoop in for him at this stage, they’ll be in with a good shot of closing the deal.

‘Has there been other contact? I did receive a few phone calls, above all from top Premier League clubs. Of course we can only be flattered and this underlines Claudio’s excellent season so far. Obviously, his preference remains Juventus. He was born and raised at Juventus, so if things go normally, negotiations for a renewal should be simple. Having said that, it takes two to form a marriage.’

To continue the marriage metaphor, Liverpool seem to have an excellent shot of playing the home wrecker here. They’re in desperate need of some experience in this area of the pitch and Claudio Marchisio looks like the perfect candidate. They should be trying to tempt him away from his current club.

Whether Brendan Rodgers has the nous and allure to do this, however, remains to be seen.

What’s your take? Will Claudio Marchisio ever leave Juventus? Could Liverpool be his next destination?
