Asier Illarramendi, Real MadridLiverpool fans have enjoyed a mixed couple of weeks. They crashed out of the Europa League thanks to a lacklustre performance against Besiktas, before bouncing back with an exciting 2-1 victory over Manchester City. Given their respective places in the Premier League table and the fact that The Reds had played on Thursday, it was a particularly good result.

The Reds are interestingly placed at the moment. They’ve got a lot of fresh new talent coming through, but many of their expensive new signings just haven’t hit the ground running. With Steven Gerrard off to America in the summer and Mario Balotelli failing to produce the goods, Brendan Rodgers is likely to be fairly busy during the next iteration of the transfer window.

This leads me onto The Metro‘s claim that Liverpool are now in the market to sign Real Madrid star, Asier Illarramendi. The 24-year-old is currently operating as Madrid’s defensive midfielder. He’s a physically tough, enforcer type, who also happens to be pretty handy on the ball. The aforementioned source suggests that The Reds view him as a potential replacement for Steven Gerrard.

One thing’s for sure: Illarramendi won’t struggle to adapt to the physicality of the Premier League. He’s a real athlete, who’ll run and run, close players down, force mistakes and slam into tackles. He’s the kind of player who can help The Reds to dominate games. Once he’s in possession, he moves the ball on quickly and he’s proven to be pretty good at instigating attacks.

At the moment he’s behind both Toni Kroos and Lucas Silva in the Real Madrid pecking order, so it wouldn’t surprise me if he were on the hunt for a new home in the summer transfer window. Indeed, The Metro suggest that he could become a Liverpool player if Brendan Rodgers can cough up the £17.5m required to close the deal.

I’m not sure I buy that he’s a like-for-like replacement for Steven Gerrard, but he could prove to be a good signing none the less.

What’s your take? Is Asier Illarramendi a good fit for The Reds?

please don’t make silly comments, we changed the team a lot last summer and look how long it has taken for them to gel, you want to put 8 new players into the starting 11, and why in the world would isco and varane want to move from the best team in the world at the moment. i hope we can get laccazette but probably wont. we have given saints too much money recently and not got enough in return don’t want to do too much business with them for awhile plenty of good right backs around for much less money. may need to sign 7 players as we need a big clear out but only 1 or 2 should come straight into the line up.
