After a second simultaneous season of treading water, Manchester United are once again in a position where they need to show some ambition in the summer transfer window. If they don’t, they’ll be accused of complacency. In fact, if Louis Van Gaal doesn’t spend big, you can bet that there’ll be a wealth of think pieces about how ‘Manchester United’s fall from grace is complete’.
With Manchester United not competing on he football pitch anymore, the only place they can really take on their rivals is in the transfer window. Perhaps if they find the right players, they’ll find themselves in a position to start winning silverware again.
I hope that Louis Van Gaal kicks the summer off by signing some defensive talent. I’m not sure that The Red Devils have ever truly recovered from losing Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra in the same time period. Louis Van Gaal could certainly use a little more quality in this area of the pitch.
This brings me to The Metro‘s rather exciting claim that Manchester United are set to move in for FC Porto’s star right-back, Danilo.
The Brazilian ace’s reputation has grown and grown over the previous two seasons. He’s known for his pace, his willingness to bomb up and down the flanks, his crossing ability and his desire to cut inside and cause havoc within the opposition penalty area. He’s not as good defensively as he is offensively, but his speed often helps him to mop up any mistakes.
At 23-years-old, Danilo still has a fair amount of developing to do, but I’d love to see him continue to learn his trade in a Manchester United shirt. There’s a good chance that he’s going to blossom into a world class footballer over the coming years, so he’d probably make for a good investment.
Unfortunately for Van Gaal, he’s not going to come cheap. According to the aforementioned source, if Manchester United want to sign him, they’re going to have to trigger his £36.3m release clause.
What a statement of intent that would be. I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed in the hope that Louis Van Gaal will pursue this one.
