Is there any way back to greatness for Manchester United?

Ripped from the same cloth...

Since losing their figurehead, Manchester United have looked a little dazed and confused. When you’ve had somebody leading the way for so long, such that their ideology is deeply embedded into the club, their abdication is always likely to cause complications.

But who would have thought that Sir Alex Ferguson’s decision to step down would have such major consequences for his club? Surely his inheritor would be taking charge of a club that was primed for success in every respect?

Then how do we explain the two transitional years that Manchester United have gone through since Sir Alex left? How do we explain the fact that two managers (one half decent, one great) have failed to steady the ship. Is there something endemic about the state that Fergie left his club in? Is the position of Manchester United boss now a poisoned chalice?

According to Jamie Carragher, there’s no way back for The Red Devils now. The former Liverpool defender (he’s got no reason to have it out for Manchester United, does he?) had this to say:

‘It will never been the same as it was under Fergie. You’re talking about a club that had just one manager for 26 years; a manager who had his own way of doing things, his own way of seeing things – just like any boss. Of course, United are used to fighting for the title. Now they’re fighting for the top four.’

‘That’s been the difference since Sir Alex Ferguson left; it just shows you the impact he had on that club because last season, especially, most of the players Ferguson had were still there.’ (Source: The Express)

Carragher makes some salient points, but he’s forgetting something important: Manchester United’s financial fortitude. Sir Alex Ferguson built one of the richest clubs in world football. His club is now willing and able to throw money at their problems.

They spent £59.7m on Angel Di Maria. They gave Radamel Falcao a major contract. Don’t be surprised if they make similar moves in the summer transfer window.

And don’t be surprised if slowly, but surely, they climb back into the European Elite.

What’s your take? Is Jamie Carragher right? What does the future hold for Manchester United?
