Could Manchester United really wrap up this £71.1m deal?

Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United)In the run up to the summer transfer window, I expect to see Manchester United get linked to a number of high profile, big money footballers. After all, their performances have been lacklustre this season and they’re in desperate need of a little bit of inspiration.

The Radamel Falcao, Angel Di Maria experiment has been a failure. I expect that we’ll see Louis Van Gaal go back to the drawing board this summer and I expect that he won’t be afraid to throw money at the club’s problems.

This brings me to The Metro‘s claim that Manchester United are now ready to ‘open talks’ with Real Madrid over a deal to sign Cristiano Ronaldo. This is a transfer rumour that just won’t go away. The Red Devils have picked up links to their former charge every summer for the last three or four years.

Ever since Ronaldo left Old Trafford, he’s continued to speak kindly about his old club. Manchester United fans rate the Portuguese ace highly and he’s returned the favour by suggesting (on numerous occasions) that he wouldn’t mind returning back to the fold one day.

The aforementioned source claims that Manchester United have already contacted Ronaldo’s agent, Jorges Mendes. They’re attempting to close a deal that could be worth as much as £71.1m. That’s less than they spent on Gareth Bale, but it’s good money for a 30-year-old.

Despite his age, Ronny has been enjoying some of the best form of his career. In 38 games this season, he’s managed to find the back of the net 41 times. There’s no reason to believe that he’s slowing down. Indeed, there’s a good chance that he’ll keep up this kind of form for the next two or three years to come.

If Manchester United have £71.1m spare, it could prove to be money well spent. Just imagine the belief and good feeling that would be pumped around Old Trafford if Ronaldo were to make a shock return to English football.

This deal still seems a long way away, but I’ll keep my fingers crossed nonetheless.

What’s your take? Will we ever see Cristiano Ronaldo in a Manchester United shirt again?
