Karim Benzema (France)For much of the first half of the season, Liverpool struggled. They had a lot of new players to bed in and they didn’t all hit the ground running. Mario Balotelli, The Reds’ £16m signing, was particularly disappointing.

After scoring 30 goals in 54 games, Balotelli’s return to English football saw his goal-scoring impetus dry up completely. This has led to some of his worst traits coming out. He’s one of the most selfish strikers in European football, he doesn’t link up well with his midfield and he gives the ball away far too easily.

Things turned around when Daniel Sturridge ditched his injury problems, but The Reds still have a major issue in that area of the pitch. Without their English centre-forward, Liverpool aren’t half as effective as they should be. What happens if Sturridge picks up another long-term injury or suspension?

The Reds just can’t afford to gamble in this area of the pitch.

This brings me to The Metro‘s exciting claim that Liverpool are now ‘ready to sign’ Real Madrid’s star striker, Karim Benzema. He’s been linked with a move to Anfield for a long time, but I have to say, I never really believed that this deal would come to pass. Now things seem to be moving in the right direction.

Benzema is a truly world class talent. He’s played 274 games for Real Madrid and he’s found the back of the net 131 times. This season alone, he’s made 39 appearances and has scored 20 goals. I’d love to see him get a run out in the Premier League.

According to the aforementioned source, Carlo Ancelotti is willing to cash-in on the Frenchman. His current asking price is £34.5m.

That’s a huge amount of money, but think about what this deal could do for The Reds. They’d have two world class strikers in tow and a much better opportunity of winning silverware. If Brendan Rodgers can scrape the cash together, I’d argue that Benzema would make for a good investment.

What’s your take? Do Liverpool need one more striker?
