After crashing out of the FA Cup, I wouldn’t be surprised if Louis Van Gaal were keen for the summer to arrive already. After all, The Red Devils have precious little left to fight for this season. The best they can aim for now is a top four finish.
If they don’t finish in a Champions League slot this year, then there are likely to be serious repercussions. If they do manage to nip in ahead of the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham, then Louis Van Gaal will probably be handed a decent budget to do with what he will in the summer transfer window.
That’s what Manchester United need more than anything else at this moment in time: an opportunity to throw their money at their problems. Let’s just hope that they make better decisions than they did last time around.
This brings me to The Metro‘s claim that Manchester United are still in the market to sign Borussia Dortmund’s star midfielder, Ilkay Gundogan. The German ace spent the majority of last season out injured, but he’s worked hard to re-gain his fitness and he’s now starting to re-find his form.
Dortmund have been in dire form all season long, but Gundogan’s return has managed to improve the situation. He’s an all action midfielder, who slams into tackles, makes bag-loads of interceptions, works extremely hard for his team and helps his side to dominate possession. When he’s in possession, he excels at short, quick passing and rarely gives the ball away.
With Manchester United in need of a player who can move the ball about quickly and accurately (whilst providing the club with a little more competitive edge), Ilkay Gundogan could prove to be a good fit.
According to the aforementioned source, Gundogan could be available for as little as £18.4m. That’s no small sum of cash, but it’s certainly well within The Red Devils’ financial reach. Let’s hope that Louis Van Gaal is able to close this deal when the summer rolls by.
