Who’s Arsenal’s number one right-back?

Calum ChambersArsenal fans were sad to see Bacary Sagna leave The Emirates last summer, but it strikes me that the right-back berth is now an area where the club is spoilt for choice. The Gunners just aren’t missing the Frenchman at all (who has only made 11 appearances for Manchester City, since switching allegiances).

Let’s focus on the options that Arsenal can call upon.

First up, there’s Mathieu Debuchy who’s smack-bang in the middle of a three-month injury lay-off. We haven’t seen much of the Frenchman since he joined the club in the summer (largely due to his two lengthy periods on the sideline), but what we’ve seen has been impressive. He’s quick, he’s good on the ball and he’s decent in the air for a (relatively) short defender.

We’ve seen a lot more of Calum Chambers. A surprising amount in fact. He’s thus far made 29 appearances for his new team. As you’d expect for a 20-year-old, he’s been inconsistent. He tends to struggle against pacy players, but he’s done well against some of the Premier League’s more technically minded players. There’s a good chance that he’s going to blossom into a star.

But my pick of the litter is Hector Bellerin, a 19-year-old right back with a trendy hair-cut and good crossing ability. Unlike Chambers, Bellerin also happens to be lightning quick. Even if the ball gets given away high up the pitch, the speedy Spaniard usually manages to find away to get back and nip the ball away with a well timed tackle.

He’s still learning his trade, but put given his natural ability (and the fact that he’s broken Theo Walcott’s 40m sprint time), he’s certainly worth watching. I hope Arsene Wenger continues to give him game-time, even after Mathieu Debuchy returns from injury.

All this and I haven’t even mentioned Carl Jenkinson yet. He’s a massive Arsenal fan (as well as being a top right-back), but he’s currently on loan at West Ham. It wouldn’t surprise me if that loan deal were to transform into a permanent one. There’s just not enough space in The Gunners’ squad for a fourth right back.

That’s the price of competition, I suppose!

What’s your take? Who’s Arsenal’s best right-back?

Chambers is a CB, Wenger has said he thinks of him as a central player as well so he is an EMERGENCY RB…

When Jenkinson returns then Debuchy will be 30, not the youngest of players and we will have the oppertunity to sell him still at the end of next season when he’ll be nearly 31.

So basically if we keep Jenkinson and loan out Bellerin for 1 season(next season) then Bellerin and Jenkinson can be the RB’s the season after and they’ll both have over a season worth of EPL regular football.

Rest of this season: Debuchy & Bellerin. (Jenkinson out on loan to a EPL team)
Next season: Jenkinson & Debuchy. (Bellerin out on loan to a EPL team)
Season after: Jenkinson & Bellerin. (Sell Debucy)

Chambers will be a Central defender, he will probably in time become England’s Centre Half.
