Should Liverpool still be interested in this £24m talent?

Henrikh MkhitaryanJust 16 months ago, The Reds were picking up strong links to Shakhtar Donetsk’s star midfielder, Henrikh Mkhitaryan. At the time the Armenian ace was scoring goals for fun. The Ukrainian league isn’t known for its intensity, or its quality, but when you score that many goals you tend to attract the attention of big clubs.

Liverpool were interested with good reason. For some time now, they’ve been on the hunt for a long-term replacement for Steven Gerrard. Brendan Rodgers probably bought Adam Lallana for that purpose. But I’d argue that the former Southampton man probably isn’t the best fit. With Steven Gerrard set to move on at the end of the season, perhaps The Reds will look once again to Henrikh Mkhitaryan?

When Liverpool failed to capitalise on their interest in him a year and a half ago, he ended up moving to Borussia Dortmund, where he’s been fairly inconsistent. When you consider that he scored 29 goals in 42 games during his last season at Shakhtar, his return of 14 goals in 64 games for his new club is a little disappointing.

He’s been particularly bad this season (as have most of this Borussia Dortmund team) as he’s played 19 times and scored just once. In fact, his wayward shooting has cost his club big time. They’re currently 16th in the Bundesliga table.

Right on cue, The Metro claims that Liverpool have re-opened transfer negotiations to sign Henrikh Mkhitaryan. We’ve come full circle. The source notes that the player’s agent has previously hinted that the midfielder expects to leave his current digs at the end of the season. Could The Reds be set to capitalise on this situation?

When Dortmund signed Mkhitaryan he was worth £24m. I’d argue that his price-tag will have plummeted over the last few months. Despite this, it’s clear that he’s still a top player. He’s a positive individual who loves to get forward and always takes up smart positions in and around the box. He’s got bags of energy.

When he gets his goal-scoring mojo back, he’s going to prove to everybody exactly how good he is. Maybe Liverpool are right to be interested after all?

What’s your take? Should Liverpool still be interested in Henrikh Mkhitaryan?
