LacazetteLiverpool fans must still be rejoicing: Mario Balotelli has finally opened his Premier League goal-scoring account for his new club. More than that, the Italian trouble-maker managed to find the back of the net during an important moment of an important game. With The Reds level with Spurs during their mid-week clash, Balotelli managed to conjure up a winner in the nick of time.

Some will hope that he kicks on as a result. This goal could open the floodgates and he could soon start scoring on a regular basis. Others, on the other hand, aren’t feeling quite so positive. Mario Balotelli has been so poor this season (and has looked so uninterested), that it’s difficult to see him ever turning things around on a long-term basis.

This must explain why The Reds are still picking up links to new strikers. Take, for instance, The Metro‘s claim that Brendan Rodgers is in the market for Lyon’s goal-scoring sensation, Alexandre Lacazette. The source claims that Liverpool are now in ‘pole position’ to sign the Frenchman and quote French football expert, Julien Laurens, who says that they ‘really like [Lacazette]’.

Interesting stuff, eh? There’s no smoke without fire.

It’s easy enough to see why Brendan Rodgers and co. would be attracted to Alexandre Lacazette. The Frenchman has one of the best strike-rates in European football at the moment. This season he’s scored 25 goals in 29 games. That’s a remarkable return. Compare it, for instance, to Mario Balotelli’s goal-scoring record for Liverpool.

But he’s more than just a goal-scorer. He’s great on the ball, he’s technically good and he’s got plenty of pace. Better still, he’s physically tough, so he should fit in nicely in the Premier League.

There’s no word as to how much he may end up costing, but I imagine that he won’t be cheap. Still, if Liverpool want to compete at the top level, they’re going to need to cough up the cash. Let’s hope that Brendan Rodgers is up to the challenge.

What’s your take? Should The Reds be in the market for this Ligue 1 sensation?
