Diego GodinWith Manchester United on the hunt for a new centre-back, they’ve been linked to a number of decent options. The same names seem to keep coming up again and again: Borussia Dortmund’s star centre-back, Mats Hummels, Real Madrid youngster, Raphael Varane and Athletic Bilbao starlet, Aymeric Laporte.

These are all good options, but I’m not sure they’re the best possible options. I can’t help but feel that they can do better still. Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic left the club last summer, but they still need replacing. Whoever comes in next summer needs to live up to their legend.

With that in mind, why don’t The Red Devils move in for Diego Godin? For my money he’s the best, most experienced centre-back currently playing. He’s the kind of footballer I’d love to see in the Premier League.

From the sounds of things, his Uruguayan compatriot, Diego Forlan, is with me. Check out his comments here:

“My compatriot Diego Godin is one of the best defenders in the world, good enough to play for any team in any league. In 2014, he had a better year than any other defender. He scored the goal in Camp Nou against Barcelona that won Atletico Madrid the league title on the final day.

“Was there a better central defensive partnership in club football than Godin and the Brazilian Miranda last season? Yet he was not named in the Fifa FIFPro World XI team of the year.”

That’s a pretty convincing argument. Despite how Spain-centric the FIFPro World XI Team of the Year was, the judges still didn’t manage to find a place in it for Diego Godin. This is patently ridiculous given how influential he was last season.

The same source notes that Manchester Untied have a £150m transfer kitty and are considering spending a portion of this money on Diego Godin. I can’t help but hope that these rumours are true.

What’s your take? Is Diego Godin one of the best centre-backs in the world? Would he be a good fit for Manchester United?
