For the last 12 months or so, The Reds have been strongly linked to Paris Saint Germain’s star winger, Ezequiel Lavezzi. Could the Argentine ace finally put pen to paper before the January transfer window slams shut?
Liverpool fans will certainly hope so.
As The Express note, Lavezzi has been left out of Laurent Blanc’s winter training squad. This suggests that he doesn’t really have a future in Paris. Indeed, he seems to have been getting phased out of PSG over the last month. His last appearances saw him on the pitch for as little as five minutes as his side went on to beat Saint Etienne 1-0.
A player as good as this really shouldn’t be getting short shrift. I’m sure that there are a lot of clubs watching on with great interest to see how his situation develops.
But there’s more. According to the aforementioned source, Liverpool have sent scouts to watch the Argentina international in action. They suggest that a £14m deal could be wrapped up in the next 24 hours. Things seem to be progressing nicely here.
It’s difficult to guess what kind of impact Ezequiel Lavezzi will have in the Premier League. He’ll be 30-years-old in a few months time after all. Still, there’s no doubting his pace, technique or his application. What’s more, he’s proven during his time in Paris that he can be hugely effective in the final third.
In 109 games for PSG, he’s scored 25 goals and racked up 21 assists. In other words, he’s affecting the game in a major way at least once every two matches. I’d argue that The Reds could use a player like this in their squad.
£14m is a lot to spend on a player his age, but it could prove to be a good investment if he helps The Reds to earn Champions League football next season. Perhaps this is why Brendan Rodgers is moving in?
