Lucas SilvaDespite having spent a fortune over the last two years, The Red Devils are still serving up hugely inconsistent displays. You never quite know which version of Manchester United is going to show up. Will it be a Sir Alex Ferguson-esque side who ends up blitzing their opposition, or a David Moyes/Louis Van Gaal-esque side who ends up disappointing and frustrating?

Southampton are a good side and they managed to get a well earned point last Sunday, but I was still disappointed with the lack of endeavour that Manchester United offered up throughout the game, particularly in the second half. I’d argue that their midfield is still lacking in talent. It doesn’t fizz with ability in the way that it used to. Players like Marouane Fellaini and Juan Mata just aren’t dynamic enough.

So when I see Louis Van Gaal and co. getting linked to decent midfield talent, I tend to sit up and take interest.

This brings me to The Express‘s claim that Manchester United are still weighing up a move for Cruziero’s bright young spark, Lucas Silva. They’re not the only ones: Arsenal, Chelsea and Real Madrid are also thought to be interested. The player has a £12m price-tag and a big future ahead of him.

£12m is a lot of money, but it’s a decent price for a Brazilian prodigy nowadays. Just think of what Paris Saint Germain spent on Lucas Moura a few years back (helping Manchester United to dodge that bullet in the process). What’s more, given how much The Red Devils spent in the summer, they probably won’t have too much to spend this January. Silva could be just the bargain signing they need.

Unfortunately, he seems to have his eyes set on another destination. Check out these comments: ‘In January the market opens in Europe and anything can happen. There is a lot of speculation over Real Madrid, with lots of news and questions. What I can say is that there is nothing definite. I’m a Cruzeiro player, I’ve had a good season and anything can happen. Real Madrid would be a dream and a big step forward for me.’

He describes a move to ‘Real Madrid’ as a dream, but I’m more interested in something else he said: ‘anything can happen’. He’s clearly an open minded type. As such, perhaps it’s not too late for Manchester United to tempt him off in another direction. Maybe we’ll see him at Old Trafford soon enough.

We can have dreams of our own, can’t we?

What’s your take? Is Lucas Silva the kind of player that Manchester United need?
