VaraneIn the run-up to the January transfer window, The Gunners were linked to a lot of different defensive talent. Some of the players mentioned were genuinely exciting individuals who could make a major impact in the Premier League. Others weren’t quite so exciting (I’m talking about the Ron Vlaars and Winston Reids of this world).

Given Arsenal’s current situation, I’d argue that Arsene Wenger should only be targeting top talent. If that means spending big this January, then so be it.

After all, without Laurent Koscielny, Per Mertesacker has been a shadow of his former self this year. Even Nacho Monreal has looked better than the big German. As such, there’s plenty of room for improvement.

This brings me to The Metro‘s claim that Arsenal ‘should try’ to sign Real Madrid’s highly regarded young centre-back, Raphael Varane. The source suggests that he’s been told that he can leave The Bernabeu, as the club currently has too many quality defensive options.

If The Gunners are ready and willing to offer the Spanish powerhouse £20m they may be able to snap Raphael Varane up. Unfortunately, they’re unlikely to have things completely their own way. Both Manchester United and Chelsea are also thought to be interested and they’ve got plenty of financial firepower.

Here’s hoping that The Gunners are able to beat their Premier League rivals to the punch. At 21-years-old, Raphael Varane is already considered to be one of the best defenders in Europe. He’s earned 17 caps for the French international team and he’s a regular performer for Real Madrid. He’s tall (about 6 foot 3 inches), he’s smart and he’s relatively quick along the ground.

He’s already a world-class talent. Now there’s no telling how good he’s going to get. Arsene Wenger knows French talent particularly well. If he’s willing to spend big on Raphael Varane, then it’s with good reason. I’ll certainly be keeping my fingers crossed this January.

What’s your take? Could Arsenal really be in the market for this Real Madrid sensation?

If you really researched this player you will see that Arsene made a bid for him long before RM even knew he existed. It seems that certain clubs wait to see who AW is scouting then jump in with daft money. We need Varane and two worldclass DM……ge them and we win the lot for a few years to come!
