PSGLavezzi. It’s been an interesting season to be a Liverpool fan. After the highs of last year, what we’ve seen so far this time around has been a little more disappointing. A series of ups and downs.

Even when The Reds perform well, they can’t seem to get the results they need (case in point: their 2-2 draw against Arsenal).

Then there’s the fact that Brendan Rodger’s boys are really struggling to grind out results against Premier League minnows (case in point: the agonising 1-0 draw against Burnley). Is this a problem with player motivation? Does Rodgers not have enough quality in his squad?

This brings me to the news that The Reds have been handed a ‘boost’ in their long-term pursuit of Paris Saint Germain star, Ezequiel Lavezzi. Rodgers was thought to be interested in the Argentine in the summer, but a move never materialised. Perhaps things will be different this January?

After all, his PSG contract is set to expire in two summers time (approximately 18 months away), when he’ll be available as a free transfer. According to The Metro, his current paymasters have no plans to offer him a new deal. As such, the longer they leave things without selling him, the faster his value will drop.

The aforementioned source claims that he’s currently valued at around £17m (a fair price for a player of his talent), whilst also noting that there is some ‘hope’ that Liverpool could land a better ‘bargain’. Investigating this situation certainly looks like it’s worth Brendan Rodger’s time.

Lavezzi is 29-years-old now, and he continues to play a key role in a PSG side that’s bristling with talent. He made 90 appearances for the Paris based side in his first two seasons at the club and he’s already made 18 appearances this year. Thus far, he’s managed to accrue 25 goals and 21 assists, which proves that he can be rather effective in the final third.

In other words, he strikes me as a player that’s worth investing in (even given the fact that he’s 29-years-old). Let’s hope Brendan Rodgers is able to pull this one off.

What’s your take? Is Ezequiel Lavezzi still a viable option for The Reds?
