RamosManchester United’s defensive shortcomings have been a real obstacle for the club thus far this season. Under Sir Alex Ferguson, The Red Devils were a tough side to break down. You’d have to move the ball around pretty quick, or do something pretty special in order to create an opportunity against them.

I think it’s fair to say that this isn’t the case any more. Not since David Moyes took charge. Louis Van Gaal hasn’t made things much better. If you get at this Manchester United side you soon discover that they’re their for the taking. I think it’s fair to say that United’s results have been affected as a result.

But now that we’re slap bang in the middle of the January transfer window, Louis Van Gaal has an opportunity to fix his defense. Here’s hoping that he’s up to the task.

This brings me to The Metro‘s claim that The Red Devils are hoping to seal a deal for Real Madrid’s experienced centre-back, Sergio Ramos. The Spaniard has been a mainstay at The Bernabeu for such a long time that it’s a little difficult to picture him playing for a different club. Still, he may be tempted by the possibility of playing for a side with as much history (and money) as Manchester United.

According to the aforementioned source, Van Gaal and co are willing to offer Ramos a mammoth salary package in order to drag a deal across the line. It’s thought that they’re willing to offer him £105,000 after tax. Whether that’s enough to tempt him to the Premier League remains to be seen.

Even if they can agree personal terms with the player, they’re also going to need to agree a deal with Real Madrid. That may not be so easy. After all, why would they want to let go of a player who’s been so useful for them over the last half-decade or so?

The only way I can see this deal going through is if Ramos agitates for a move. Perhaps that big salary offer from Manchester United will help persuade him to do exactly that.

What’s your take? Could Manchester United seal a deal for Sergio Ramos?
