Have Arsenal stumbled upon a solution to their defensive blues?

Mario Suarez (Atletico)Mathieu Flamini has proven to be a key figure in Arsenal’s December games (I’d argue that he performed well against both Queens Park Rangers and West Ham, helping to keep The Gunners in winning positions), but there are still some who remain unconvinced by the Frenchman.

The problem, I think, lies with Flamini’s lack of pace and height. No one can fault his commitment, or his competitive nature. He’s more than willing to dive into challenges, or throw himself in front of the ball. Unfortunately, he’s not always sprightly enough to get there.

On a couple of occasions this season, I’ve seen games pass him by. With Mikel Arteta injured (and probably not the best solution either), Arsene Wenger would do well to find another option in this part of the park.

This brings me to The Mail‘s claim that Arsenal are ‘set to make a long-awaited move for a new defensive midfielder’. The man they’ve singled out is Atletico Madrid’s well regarded Spanish ace, Mario Suarez.

The 27-year-old played a key role in Madrid’s title-winning season last year, but his game time has since been limited by the rise of players like Tiago and Raul Garcia. The player himself is believed to be ready to move on. Arsenal could provide him with the perfect exit route.

Arsene Wenger must have seen something that he likes about the Spaniard. Suarez is physically tough, he’s good on the ball and he works extremely hard. He covers a lot of ground in every game, breaks up opposition play whenever possible and wins the ball back a lot.

He also likes to support attacks whenever possible, so he should slot quite neatly into this Arsenal team. It’s easy to see why Arsene Wenger and co. might be interested.

There’s no word as to how much he might cost, but he’s certainly worth considering.

What’s your take? Is Mario Suarez the perfect option for Arsenal? Is there anybody else that The Professor should be looking at?
