Despite signing Daley Blind in the summer, Manchester United are constantly plagued by accusations that their midfield lacks a certain amount of competitive edge. Many fans feel that they still miss the kind of player who will slam into tackles, win the ball back and make life difficult for opposition players.
Former Manchester United defender Danny Higginbotham certainly feels that way. That’s why he’s suggested that his old club should move in for The Saints’ well regarded midfielder, Morgan Schneiderlin. Check out his comments here, via The Express:
‘There are a few players about, I think he [Schneiderlin] is one of them. There will be a lot of teams around that are interested in signing him, and he may even look at today – no disrespect to Southampton – as an advert to put himself on show.”
Higginbotham is talking about last Sunday’s clash between Manchester United and Southampton. He’s suggesting that the player may have seen the game as an opportunity to earn a move to a bigger club. I think the Frenchman has already proved that he’s ready for a step up in class.
He’s been in excellent form all season long. What’s more, given that Southampton ended up beating The Red Devils’ 1-0, it’s questionable who is the ‘bigger’ side at the moment.
Still, Manchester United will feel that they have the history, reputation and financial reach to tempt Schneiderlin into a move. I’m sure that the opportunity to play under Louis Van Gaal would also provide some appeal.
If Van Gaal is interested in making a move for Schneiderlin he’s likely to face competition from clubs like Arsenal, who are also looking to bolster their midfield. Either way, it’s going to be interesting to watch this one play out. I certainly wouldn’t want to bet on Schneiderlin staying at St Mary’s Park past this summer. But whether he’ll end up playing his football at Old Trafford remains to be seen.
