Could Manchester United really seal this shock £45m deal?

Thomas MullerManchester United spent a lot of money last summer, but they’re still getting linked to some major players this January. It seems that Louis Van Gaal still has some unfinished business to take care of.

Given what we’ve seen of The Red Devils thus far this season, I’d argue that this is exactly right. Manchester United do need further reinforcements in different areas of the pitch.

One area where they look pretty strong is upfront, in the forward positions. But with Robin Van Persie and Wayne Rooney getting on in years, Radamel Falcao’s future uncertain and Angel Di Maria inconsistent, perhaps there is scope for further recruitment in this department.

This brings me to The Metro‘s surprising claim that Manchester United are ‘keen’ to sign Bayern Munich’s star forward, Thomas Muller.

The German ace has been linked to Manchester United throughout his career and he once played under Louis Van Gaal whilst the Dutchman was manager of Bayern. It’s easy enough to see why the papers have been willing to give this rumour their backing.

It’s worth noting that Muller is one of the deadliest forwards in the game and one of the best finishers in the world. In 279 games for Bayern Munich, he’s found the back of the net 110 times. This season alone he’s notched 11 goals in 23 games.

He’s renowned for his mobility, his smart positioning and his late, dynamic runs into the box. He could prove to be a breath of fresh air for Manchester United, if they’re able to close the deal.

Unfortunately, that eventuality looks a little unlikely at the moment. The aforementioned source claims that Manchester United have lodged a £45m bid for the German. He’s got a huge price-tag and Bayern Munich aren’t going to want to sell.

After all, at 25-years-old, Thomas Muller is about to enter his peak footballing years (that’s a scary thought). Whoever has him on their books during this time are in for a real treat. I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed that Louis Van Gaal can drag this deal across the line, despite how unlikely that looks at the moment.

What’s your take? Is a Manchester United deal for Thomas Muller realistic?
