Arsenal fans are still waiting with baited breath to see who’s going to be brought in this January. Arsene Wenger has to sign somebody, right?
The general consensus is that The Gunners need to snap up two players: a centre-back to provide some competition for Per Mertesacker and a defensive midfielder to knock the likes of Mathieu Flamini and Mikel Arteta out of the first team.
Whilst I’m a fan of the Spaniard, I do think it’s time for Arsenal to look at new options in this department. The Gunners get caught on the break all too often and it’s clear that their back-four aren’t getting enough protection. Something needs to be done.
As it happens, they’ve been linked to a number of intriguing options. Some of the names include: Sami Khedira, Morgan Schneiderlin and William Carvalho. Whilst all three are good options, I believe there’s a better one out there. One that is currently a little bit underrated due to his recent injury troubles.
The man in question is Borussia Dortmund’s star midfielder, Ilkay Gundogan. He’s a tough tackler, who’s not afraid to get physical. He makes a lot of interceptions in every game and he works hard to win the ball back whenever possible.
What’s more, he’s pretty handy when he’s on the ball. He can pick out a pass, put the ball into dangerous areas and he’s even capable of popping up with the occasional goal.
According to The Metro, Arsenal have already made a £15.6m offer for the German ace. The source claims that Dortmund are ‘seriously considering accepting it’. I’ve got my fingers crossed in the hope that this deal will indeed come to pass.
A year or so back, before his injury problems begun, he’d have been worth considerably more than that. But now that he’s back to full fitness, his price-tag is only going to rise-and-rise. Now’s the right time for Arsenal to make their move.
Either way, it’s going to be interesting to see how this situation plays out.
