Are Liverpool right to target this £20m Southampton ace?

Jay Rodriguez 1Spare a thought, if you will, for Southampton’s star striker, Jay Rodriguez. The man had taken the Premier League by storm, was scoring goals for fun, leading The Saints to greater glory and was even making in roads into the England team. The world was his oyster. The future looked bright.

But then something snapped. More precisely, Rodriguez ruptured an anterior cruciate ligament. He’s been out of action for a long time. It’s not unreasonable to think that this injury could slow down his career in a pretty major way.

Still, the good news is that Jay Rodriguez is now well on the way to recovery. He’s set to see ‘specialists’ this week regarding his come-back. We might see him back in action (if he’s able to break back into this hyper-talented Southampton side) fairly soon.

Despite his injury, Rodriguez has continued to pick up links to some top clubs. Take this recent claim from The Metro, who suggest that The Reds are preparing a £20m bid for the 25-year-old striker, if he’s given the all-clear when it comes to his injury prognosis.

The Saints won’t want to let him go, but Rodriguez does strike me as a good fit for Liverpool. With forwards like Mario Balotelli, Rickie Lambert and Fabio Borini struggling to produce the goods, it makes sense to start looking elsewhere. Daniel Sturridge’s continued injury problems practically necessitate action.

Last year Jay scored 17 goals in 39 games for The Saints. He’s now a proven entity in the Premier League. He’s quick on his feet, takes up dangerous positions and he’s developed into a good finisher. If he hits the ground running following his convalescence he could prove to be a good signing, even with that £20m price-tag.

Now we just need to wait and see if Brendan Rodgers is really willing to spend big on another striker.

What’s your take? Should The Reds make a move for this Southampton star? How long will it take Jay Rodriguez to recover from his injury problems?
