Should Manchester United trade Radamel Falcao for this £50m striker?

Cavani2When Manchester United signed Radamel Falcao (on loan) from Monaco in the summer the deal was met with a great deal of excitement. With Wayne Rooney and Robin Van Persie offering diminishing returns, the Colombian hitman looked like the perfect solution.

This must be why Louis Van Gaal negotiated a clause to sign Falcao permanently at the end of the season for £43.5m. When you consider that Manchester United spent £6m on the loan deal, £49.5m (let’s call it £50m) isn’t a bad fee for a player with his goal-scoring record.

Unfortunately things haven’t worked out so well thus far. After spending much of last season on the sidelines nursing a long-term injury, he’s struggled to make an impact this season. I’m not sure he was fully recovered when The Red Devils signed him and as a result, he’s had to spend a significant portion of his time at Old Trafford warming the bench. It’s not ideal.

When he has played he hasn’t looked to be at his effective best.

Perhaps this explains why The Metro recently ran an article suggesting that Manchester United are ready to ‘ditch plans’ to sign Falcao on a permanent basis. The source claims that Louis Van Gaal has turned his attention to Paris Saint Germain’s world class centre-forward, Edinson Cavani.

In truth, there’s not a lot to chose between the Colombian and the Uruguayan, but based on both player’s current form, Cavani’s the man to get. He also has a £50m price-tag, so it’s not like he would cost Manchester United much more than Falcao would.

At the moment Edinson Cavani is stuck behind Zlatan Ibrahimovic in Paris. He’s often thrust out wide and placed in positions that he’s not entirely comfortable with. I’m sure he’d jump at the opportunity to join a top club who would give him top billing.

Let’s just hope that Manchester United give him this opportunity, even if it means saying goodbye to Radamel Falcao.

What’s your take? Who would you like to see at Old Trafford in the long-term: Radamel Falcao or Edinson Cavani?
