Just about everyone knows that Liverpool need to sign a new goalkeeper during the January transfer window. Brendan Rodgers has lost faith in Simon Mignolet and his replacement, Brad Jones, doesn’t look any better. The Reds need another solution, as soon as possible.
Luckily, there are a few options out there that are worth considering.
Taking, for instance, Genoa’s number one, Mattia Perin. Could he be the answer to Liverpool fan’s prayers?
Perin’s agent certainly seems to be doing the hard sell. Check out these recent comments from the player’s agent, Moreno Roggi:
‘Any important club on a European level that has important sums to invest cannot help but think of Mattia.’
Hint, hint! Could Roggi be any more intentionally vague? He continues:
‘They would have a very reliable goalkeeper for the next 20 years and the chance to spread the cost out over time. A bit like what Juventus did with Buffon. Liverpool? Now these voices are emerging consistently. Save for surprises, Perin will remain at Genoa until the end of the season, because I doubt the club and Gasperini want to lose a key figure in the team.’ (Source: The Metro)
Comparing your charge to Gianluigi Buffon isn’t a bad idea, is it? The idea of having a reliable goalkeeper for the next couple of decades must be appealing to Brendan Rodgers. He must be sick to death of his current options.
If Perin proves to be that man, then he’ll prove more than worthy of his rumoured £12m price-tag. Besides, at just 22-years-old, the young Italian keeper has plenty of time to grow and evolve as a player. He may need a bit of time to adapt to Premier League football, but time happens to be something he’s got plenty of.
He’s already got a cap for the Italian international team, so he looks like one for the future. Maybe it’s time for Brendan Rodgers to get in on the bottom floor?
