fabian delphLiverpool were hugely unlucky to have missed out on three points against Arsenal last weekend. They may have been 2-1 down heading into extra time and they may have been reduced to 10 men, thanks to the rashness of Fabio Borini, but they were still by far the better side. They out-classed The Gunners in just about every respect.

If only they had a little more cutting edge. If only players like Steven Gerrard weren’t beginning to look like passengers. You never quite know which version of Stevie G is going to turn up nowadays.

Brendan Rodgers faces a difficult task this January. He needs to make some major changes to his squad, but he’s not going to have a huge budget to work with. He may have to keep his eye open for a bargain or two. Luckily, his best signings seem to have been along this line. When he’s given a lot of money to spend (as was the case last summer), he hasn’t been hugely effective.

There are a few players out there that may fall within The Reds’ financial reach. Take, for instance, Aston Villa (and England) star, Fabian Delph. The 25-year-old has really come into his own this season, with a series of all-action displays in the centre-of-the-park. His England call-up also provides evidence of exactly how well regarded he is within the British footballing landscape.

What’s more, his Aston Villa contract is set to expire this summer. That will mean that he could be available for free in a few months time (assuming that he doesn’t sign a new deal with his current employers). Alternatively, Brendan Rodgers could try get a bargain deal for him during the January transfer window.

Villa boss Paul Lambert has recently spoken out about Delph’s future (and the future of Ron Vlaar, who is in a similar position contractually): “Those two lads have been fantastic for me the three years I’ve been here. They’re in their last year and from experience when you get into the Bosman ruling you hold that card.” (Source: The Express)

It sounds like Fabian Delph is available, should Brendan Rodgers be interested enough. Let’s just hope that the Liverpool boss is ready and willing to pull off one of his typical bargain signings.

What’s your should The Reds be interested in signing Aston Villa star, Fabian Delph?
