CoentraoArsenal are being linked to just about every defender under the sun, so it was only ever a matter of time before they wound up getting linked to Real Madrid’s forgotten man, Fabio Coentrao.

In 2012/13, he made 30 appearances for Madrid. In 2013/14, he made 20 appearances. Thus far this year, he’s made 10 appearances. Admittedly, this season is still young, but I’m sure you can see the pattern here. His game-time at The Bernabeu seems to be decreasing on a year-by-year basis.

As a result, Coentrao has been linked to Premier League clubs like Liverpool, Manchester United and yes, Arsenal. AC Milan and Besiktas are also thought to be interested. He may not be getting a look in at his current club, but he’s still seems to be rather popular.

There’s a good reason for this. During his time at Benfica, before his move to Real Madrid, he managed to establish himself as one of the most exciting young left-backs in the world. He’s lightning quick, he’s got excellent technique and he’s not afraid to take players on. He’s a better attacker than he is a defender, but he’s still pretty good at tracking back, marking his man and blocking crosses.

His career has slowed down in recent years, but he’s still one of the best in this position. It’s no wonder that clubs like Arsenal are interested. He’s 26-years-old now and he should be enjoying the best years of his career. Perhaps Arsene Wenger can provide him with an opportunity to do this?

According to The Express, Real Madrid value the player at £25m. That’s a lot of money, but quality doesn’t come cheap. If Arsene Wenger wants to add a bit of strength and depth to this area of the pitch, then Fabio Coentrao strikes me as a step in the right direction.

Let’s just hope he’s ready to spend big this January.

What’s your take? Can The Gunners compete with clubs like Manchester United and Liverpool to sign Fabio Coentrao?

Arsenal do not need a starting left back. Kieran Gibbs is better than all but one or two left backs in the Premier League, spending £20+ million on a player they don’t need when a center back and defensive midfielder are critical seems unlikely.
