Should Manchester United be after this £50m German sensation?

GotzeManchester United have been trying to fix their midfield for the best part of two years now. They’ve dumped a whole load of cash on the problem. As of yet, however, they don’t seem to have found a definitive solution.

Michael Carrick is getting on in years and seems to be growing ever more ineffective (his injury issues certainly haven’t helped). Marouane Fellaini is capable of great moments, but he’s also extremely frustrating to watch – fans must surely feel like their club can do better.

Then there’s Juan Mata, who is clearly a good player and a natural goal-scorer, but also somewhat inconsistent. There are some who feel like the little Spaniard isn’t dynamic enough to be United’s main source of inspiration in the centre-of-the-park.

Or perhaps he just needs a little more competition. If there were somebody who was pushing for his place in the team, perhaps he’d be producing the goods on a more regular basis?

It’s difficult to say, but this does lead me to The Metro‘s claim that Manchester United are weighing up a ‘shock’ deal for Bayern Munich star, Mario Gotze. You may remember him as the man who scored the winning Germany goal in the 2014 World Cup. You may also remember him as a bright young spark at Borussia Dortmund.

But since he’s moved to Bayern, he’s proven himself to be a real talent. He’s blown past the ‘potential’ stage and he’s now strutting his stuff on a week-by-week basis. Last year he got 15 goals in 44 games for the German Champions. This year he’s already found the back of the net 10 times and he’s only made 18 appearances. He’s clearly developing very fast and he’s only 22-years-old.

The aforementioned source claims that Manchester United would have to spend £50m if they want to get their claws on Mario Gotze. That’s a huge amount of cash, but this is one of very few players in world football who might justify that kind of expenditure. If The Red Devils are looking to find a proper fix for their midfield blues, maybe this is where they should be looking?

What’s your take? Would Mario Gotze be a good option for Louis Van Gaal, or is he just too expensive?
