Should Liverpool swoop back in for this long-term Bundesliga target?

Henrikh MkhitaryanThe Bundesliga table looks a little odd at the moment. Sure, you’ve got Bayern Munich at the top as usual, but if you pan down, right towards the bottom, you’ll notice that Borussia Dortmund are currently in last place. For a club that’s accustomed to competing on multiple fronts, winning silverware and playing some of the best football in Europe, it’s a rather bizarre situation.

Unfortunately for Jurgen Klopp, things could yet go from bad to worse. If things carry on this way, Dortmund’s best players might well up and leave. Is Marco Reus going to stick around? What about players like Mats Hummels or Henrikh Mkhitaryan?

You may remember that last guy from back when Liverpool were looking for an attacking midfielder in the summer of 2013. The Armenian looked like a perfect fit for The Reds and a deal looked nailed on, but Brendan Rodgers was beaten to the punch by a £24m bid from Borussia Dortmund.

Since then, Mkhitaryan has proven to be a good fit for Dortmund, even if his name isn’t getting any easier to spell. In his first season at the Signal Iduna Park, he found the back of the net 13 times in 45 games. What’s most impressive about Henrikh Mkhitaryan is his irrepressible attacking endeavour. He loves to bomb forward and he’s not afraid to try his luck in front of goal.

Unfortunately, composure seems to be lacking from his game this season. In 14 appearances for Borussia Dortmund this year, he’s found the back of the net only once.

This has led The Express to claim that Liverpool are now on ‘red alert’ as Mkhitaryan could be on his way out at Dortmund. This may feel a little bit like The Reds getting the German’s sloppy seconds, but if Brendan Rodgers can unlock Mkhitaryan’s best form, he’ll have signed a top player.

There’s no word to as to how much Henrikh Mkhitaryan might cost, but if Jurgen Klopp is willing to consider selling at a fair price, then he’s certainly worth considering.

What’s your take? Should Liverpool move back in for this long-term target?
