IscoWhen you look at Arsenal’s squad, it’s really difficult to arrive at the notion that Arsene Wenger is short of talented attacking midfielders. The Professor has more number tens than he knows what to do with. There’s a reason why he keeps playing naturally central players like Mesut Ozil and Santi Cazorla on the wings. The centre-of-the-park is much too congested. Even world-class footballers can’t work their way into their favoured position.

So it’s difficult to know what to make of The Express‘s claim that Arsene Wenger has one eye trained on Real Madrid’s midfield maestro, Isco. The Spanish sensation is quickly blossoming into one of La Liga’s best players. He’s been compared quite often to Xabi Alonso, but perhaps a better comparison for Arsenal fans would be Cesc Fabregas.

Like Cesc, Isco has an uncanny ability for finding time and space on the ball. More than that, however, he’s capable of picking out the kinds of passes that can turn a game on its head. He would improve more or less any team, a feat he’s already managed at The Bernabeu.

In that sense, he’d be a good signing for Arsenal. But with the aforementioned source claiming that Paris Saint Germain are considering lodging a £64m bid for the Spaniard, it’s also clear that Arsene Wenger and co. are going to struggle to compete for this player.

£64m is a huge amount of money. Just think of what else Arsene Wenger could spend this kind of cash on. He could, for instance, completely fix his defense and add a little competitive edge to his midfield.

Signing Isco would improve an already strong area of Arsenal’s squad, but it wouldn’t deal with the issues that are deeply embedded within this team. It wouldn’t get them ready to compete for silverware over the coming years.

For that reason, I hope that Arsene Wenger gets his priorities right during the January transfer window.

What’s your take? Should Arsenal consider spending £64m on Isco or would that be a waste of their money?
