Should Liverpool splash the cash on this £40m superstar?

Jackson MartinezAfter Liverpool eeked out a 1-0 victory against a well marshaled Stoke City side (with a goal from Glen Johnson of all people), Brendan Rodgers labelled his side ‘incredible’. That strikes me as a rather bizarre word to describe this team, especially given what we’ve seen in recent weeks.

It’s clear to everyone with eyes that The Reds lack a focal point upfront. Without Luis Suarez (or Daniel Sturridge) in this part of the pitch, this team represents an entirely different kettle of fish. They’re just not as effective as they were last year.

Of course, it doesn’t help that Steven Gerrard’s going through a wonky patch of form. Everything seems to be going against The Reds at the moment.

But the January transfer window is fast approaching. Brendan Rodgers will be granted another opportunity to prove that he’s right man for the job. Let’s hope he can help get this club back into contention.

To do this, I’d argue that he needs to sign a world-class striker. He needs to sign the kind of striker that he thought he was signing when he bought Mario Balotelli.

This brings me to The Express‘s claim that FC Porto have told Liverpool (and Arsenal) that they can have their star striker, Jackson Martinez, if they’re willing to pay as much as £40m.

That’s a lot of money, but take a look at the Colombian’s goal-scoring record. Since arriving at FC Porto three seasons ago, he’s scored 73 goals in 108 games. This season alone, he’s found the back of the net 13 times and he’s only played 17 games. He’s a natural in front of goal. That’s more than can be said of Mario Balotelli.

It looks like he’s the kind of player who’s worthy of a £40m price-tag. If he can bring his goal-scoring form with him over to the Premier League, he’ll prove to have been an excellent signing.

Let’s just hope that Brendan Rodgers is willing to roll the dice and spend big.

What’s your take? Would Jackson Martinez be a good addition to this Liverpool squad? Should they battle Arsenal for his signature?

LFC and rogers dont have the gut to make such a buy.BR especially believe in average players to turn things around but its not working.its high time LFC break bank and land a first class striker and i would love to see benzema in a red shirt but its a wild goose chase..
