Sergio RamosArsenal are on the hunt for a world-class centre-back. Somebody who can fill in for Laurent Koscielny whilst he’s convalescing and provide some competition for the ailing Per Mertesacker. They need somebody who isn’t going to duck out of a tackle when the going gets tough. Just about everybody knows this. The only question that remains: who are The Gunners going to bring in?

Unfortunately, there aren’t a huge amount of talented centre-backs out there. Not ones that would be available at a fair price any way. This has led to Arsenal getting linked to cheap options like Aston Villa’s Ron Vlaar and West Ham’s Winston Reid (this duo wouldn’t be too expensive thanks to their contractual situation). But shouldn’t Arsene Wenger be aiming a little higher?

Interestingly enough, The Metro recently published an article suggesting that Arsenal have their sights set on Real Madrid’s quality defender, Sergio Ramos. Now that sounds more like it to me.

The Spaniard has reportedly turned down Real Madrid’s offer of a two year contract extension. This has fueled speculation that he could be on his way out at The Bernabeu. Of course, he could just be trying to up his worth in the eyes of his Madrid paymasters, but it’s certainly worth keeping your eye on this situation.

What’s more, the aforementioned source carries quotes from Spanish reporter, Manuel Esteban Manolete, who notes that Arsenal are definitely interested: ‘Wenger has called Rene Ramos, the agent and brother of Sergio Ramos.’

Arsenal know exactly what they’re getting into when it comes to Sergio Ramos. For a start, the 28-year-old is an extremely experienced individual. He’s made over 300 appearances for Real Madrid and he’s got 124 caps for the Spanish international side. He’s fantastic in the air (unlike other Arsenal players) and he’s a threat from set-pieces (he’s scored 38 goals for Madrid).

In that sense, he’s certainly worth looking at, particularly if he’s available for the right price. It can’t hurt to enquire, can it?

What’s your take? Is Sergio Ramos right for Arsenal?
