Fabian Schar (Basel)Like so many teams in the Premier League this season, The Gunners left themselves seriously short of defensive options at the end of the summer transfer window. Plenty of fingers have been pointed at Arsene Wenger for this error in judgement, but I’d argue that the state of the market itself had a role to play. It’s not like there is a wealth of defensive talent out there.

There’s a reason why teams like Manchester United and Liverpool are also struggling in this regard. If the talent was out there, I’m sure Arsene Wenger would have moved in. The Professor can’t be blind to his current predicament. He’ll be as aware as anybody else that his back-four is lacking in options.

Let’s just hope he’s already scouring for potential options in the January transfer window. The more work he does now, the earlier he’ll be able to sign them when the transfer window re-opens.

This brings me to The Metro‘s claim that Arsenal are still in the market to sign FC Basel’s talented young defender, Fabian Schar. The source carries quotes from the player himself, who notes that he’d love to play his football in the Premier League (or Serie A) one day:

‘Basel are open to negotiations, but at this moment I have decided that I want to concentrate on my performances. My dream remains to have an experience abroad. I’ve always said that if the opportunity presented itself, I would take it, obviously in agreement with Basel. I need a team with important prospects. I’d like the Bundesliga, Premier League or top Italian clubs like Inter, Milan and Juventus. I couldn’t say no.’

I think it’s fair to say that if a club like Arsenal were to come knocking, Schar would find it difficult to turn the opportunity down. With The Metro suggesting that the Swiss ace could be Arsenal’s man for as little as £10m (a relative bargain), The Gunners would be foolish to miss out. Let’s just hope that Arsene Wenger is aware of his desire to play in the Premier League.

What’s your take? Should The Gunners move in for Fabian Schar?
