Xherdan ShaqiriDuring the summer there were a lot of rumours linking clubs like Manchester United and Liverpool to Bayern Munich’s talented wing-wizard, Xherdan Shaqiri. Unfortunately, a move never materialised. Liverpool ended up signing Lazar Markovic (who still has some convincing to do), whilst Manchester United landed Angel Di Maria (who cost them £59.7m).

Unfortunately, this has done little to serve Shaqiri’s career. Bayern Munich opted to keep him and his opportunities have been somewhat limited this season. He’s made 13 appearances, but many of these were as a substitute.

The player himself recently spoke out about how he feels that he’ll never be a first-choice starter for Bayern Munich. Check out his comments here:

“I want to play more. I wanted to go during the summer, but Bayern made their decision and I had to accept it. I thought that after the World Cup it would have been better for me to try something new. I thought I was moving and there were several offers for me, but Bayern decided I had to stay and I couldn’t do anything else.” (Source: The Metro)

That’s fairly definitive, isn’t it? Whilst he’s being philosophical about his role at the Allianz Arena, it’s clear that he wants more out of his career. He’s not the kind of man who’s content with picking up a pay-cheque and warming the bench. He wants regular action.

I’m sure that there are plenty of Premier League clubs who would be all too happy to provide him with this.

Given that Lazar Markovic is struggling to fit in in the Premier League, perhaps Liverpool would do well to re-ignite their interest in Shaqiri? After all, the Swiss ace is remarkably effective in the final third. He knows how to find the back of the net and he’s also chipped in with a huge number of assists throughout his career.

Better still, he’s only 23-years-old. He’s still going to improve and develop over the coming years (especially if he’s given regular game time).

It’s not clear how much he might cost, but given his diminished status at Bayern Munich, Liverpool should certainly start making enquiries.

What’s your take? Do Liverpool still need Xherdan Shaqiri?
