Should Arsenal cash in on this £32m superstar?

OzilSince the season has started, Mesut Ozil seems to have been singled out as Arsenal’s scapegoat du jour. What are pundits going to do now that he’s injured? Who’s supposed to shoulder the blame for The Gunners’ 2-2 draw with Hull City?

I’d argue that Arsenal’s main problem isn’t Mesut Ozil, it’s their system and the fact that Arsene Wenger keeps trying to force square pegs into round holes. The fact that Ozil, one of the best central midfielders in the world keeps getting pushed out wide is a travesty. The fact that fans have been so quick to get on his back is even worse.

I have little doubt that if Mesut Ozil got a run of games through the middle, shook off all his injury worries and earned some confidence, we’d see an entirely different side of the German. He’s not in form at the moment, but that’s not to say that things won’t change over the coming months.

His injury is inconvenient (and disappointing, especially given the situation), but he’ll still come good eventually. He’s too talented not to. Even when he’s not performing well, his touch, pin-point accuracy and grace on the ball still elevate him above most opposition players.

This brings me to The Metro’s claim that Manchester City are working on a deal to sign Mesut Ozil. The source suggests that they’re willing to offer £32m for the German. That’s a full £10m less than Arsenal spent on him two summers ago.

If Arsene Wenger were to sell for this price, it would more or less be like admitting defeat. To sell the club’s record signing to a title rival would be a bizarre move to say the least. The Professor would have to have no faith whatsoever in Ozil to agree terms with the Sky Blues.

The aforementioned source also claims that Bayern Munich are monitoring the player, but I hope that Arsenal remain resolute. If Arsenal are patient, they’ll end up getting a decent return on their investment.

It may be tempting to sell up and start afresh, but Arsenal need to stick to the path that’s already been carved out for them. Let’s just hope that success lies on the other side (and that the endpoint’s not too far away).

What’s your take? What does the future hold for Mesut Ozil?
