HiguainAfter a summer when The Reds impressed just about everyone with their free-spending attitude, they’ve followed up this activity by disappointing on the pitch.

Since Daniel Sturridge picked up an injury, Liverpool have struggled for goals and creativity. The British centre-forward seems to be the linchpin that ties the side together. His movement provides The Reds’ midfielders with a good option and his finishing ability allows them to close out games.

I think it’s fair to say that Mario Balotelli doesn’t offer the same level of effectiveness in the final third. Liverpool’s £16m new signing has yet to score in the Premier League and has looked a little clumsy thus far.

Yes, he has experience of the Premier League (from his time at Manchester City), but he doesn’t seem to have his shooting boots on at the moment. This is a little surprising given his goal-scoring form for AC Milan (30 goals in 54 games). Perhaps he’s still adjusting to the speed of British football.

With all this in mind, it would surprise nobody if The Reds were to chase a new striker during the January transfer window.

This brings me to The Express‘s claim that The Reds are currently in the market to sign Napoli centre-forward, Gonzalo Higuain. Could the Argentine ace provide the firepower that Mario Balotelli seems to lack?

Higuain’s record is very promising indeed. Whilst at Napoli, he’s scored 27 goals in 55 games. Whilst at Real Madrid, he found the back of the net 122 times in 264 games. Not too shabby, eh? He’s got experience at the top level for some top clubs. Better still, he’s only 26-years-old. His best footballing years are still ahead of him.

The aforementioned source suggests that Higuain is currently unsettled at Napoli (who are currently struggling in Serie A) and that he could be available for around £30m. That’s about the going rate for a striker of his quality.

If The Reds have enough money to close the deal, then Gonzalo Higuain is certainly worthy of their time and attention.

What’s your take? Do The Reds need to sign another big name striker?
