Should Arsenal give up on this £31m target?

HiguainDespite signing both Danny Welbeck and Alexis Sanchez in the summer (who have arguably been The Gunners stand-out performers this season), Arsenal are struggling to perform as an attacking unit.

Far too many players are misplacing their passes, making poor decisions and relinquishing possession. Something needs to give.

Either way, I’m sure that this is an area that Arsene Wenger will look at during the January transfer window. If he’s not getting enough out of his current attacking options, why wouldn’t he bring in some new recruits?

One player that Arsenal have been linked to in recent weeks is Napoli’s star striker, Gonzalo Higuain. Wouldn’t it be something if The Gunners could get their hands on this Argentine ace?

Liverpool have also been strongly linked with a £31m move for Higuain, but The Express recently published an article claiming that the player in question would refuse any potential move to Anfield. Unfortunately, the following comments do little to further Arsenal’s position either. Check them out, courtesy of Gonzalo’s brother, Federico:

“I have read and heard different things about my brother, but none of these things correspond to reality. People have spoken of the disappointment of not qualifying for the Champions League, and that this has caused resentment from Gonzalo.”

“Nothing could be further from the truth. When I speak to my brother he is calm, and happy to wear the shirt of Napoli. His future is still with the Partenopei.”

I wonder what Gonzalo Higuain will think of his brother speaking on his behalf. Either way, things don’t seem all that promising for The Gunners. If the player was unhappy at his current club, he’d be easy to sign. His current situation doesn’t exactly play into their hands.

But it’s not a lost cause either. Higuain may be happy at Napoli, but I’m sure he’d favour the opportunity to play for a more competitive club, in front of players like Mesut Ozil, Santi Cazorla and Aaron Ramsey. How many strikers would turn down an opportunity like that?

If Liverpool are considering lodging a £31m bid, The Gunners should do the same. Higuain could well provide them with the attacking impetus that they’re sorely lacking at the moment.

What’s your take? Should Arsenal continue to chase Gonzalo Higuain, or is it time to look elsewhere?
