Angelo Ogbonna (Juventus)Manchester United made a number of good, exciting signings in the summer, but they failed to add any balance to their squad. In a summer when they lost both Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand, Louis Van Gaal and co. really should have worked harder to bring in new defensive recruits.

Now The Red Devils are left with a makeshift defense and a lackluster defensive midfielder (though I’m sure Daley Blind will improve if he’s given a little more time to adapt). This is something that Louis Van Gaal will have to fix during the January transfer window, which can’t seem to come soon enough.

This brings me to The Metro‘s claim that Manchester United are keen on two Juventus players. The first man is a footballer that Manchester United have been linked to for a long time: Arturo Vidal. We know what the Chilean can offer. He’s excellent on the ball, but he’s also a fierce competitor. He’ll snap into tackles, harry the opposition and break up play wherever possible.

Once he wins the ball back, he’ll use possession wisely to make sure he picks out a red shirt in the opposition half. Oh and let’s not forget that he’s a dab hand in front of goal. In 99 appearances for Juventus, he has found the back of the net 30 times.

The other player to pique United’s interest is Juventus centre-back, Angelo Ogbonna. The Italian ace is a real athlete: he’s physically imposing, strong in the air and he’s got bags of energy. In truth, he looks like a player who’s custom built for Premier League action. More impressive still, he’s a good distributor from the back. He reminds me in some ways of Rio Ferdinand (which is apt…).

According to The Metro, The Red Devils are keen to wrap up a £51m deal (Louis Van Gaal doesn’t mind spending the club’s money, does he?) as soon as possible. The hope is that both players will arrive on January 1st, to provide them with a good opportunity to make a major impact this season.

That’s a pretty expensive rescue package, but it looks like a smart one.

What’s your take? Are Arturo Vidal and Angelo Ogbonna right for Manchester United?
