CLICKhediraOne of the biggest complaints about Arsenal’s season thus far has related to their lack of an out-and-out defensive midfielder. With The Gunners leaking goals left, right and centre, it’s not all that surprising that this position has been scapegoated somewhat.

Mikel Arteta is often played in the holding role, but he’s getting on in years and has suffered through a number of injury complaints thus far this season. When he has featured his passing game has been uncharacteristically inconsistent.

Then there’s Mathieu Flamini, who is the player within Arsenal’s squad who most resembles a typical defensive midfielder. Unfortunately, he’s slow and cumbersome. He even cost The Gunners a goal during the North London derby last weekend.

If only Arsene Wenger had managed to agree a fee for Sami Khedira during the summer. A player with that much talent could have made all the difference.

Luckily, it looks like The Gunners could still end up getting their man. According to The Metro, Arsene Wenger is still keen on the German ace and is working behind the scenes to agree a January deal. This news should have Arsenal fans rejoicing.

Sami Khedira is a tall, physical presence who’s full of vim and vigour. He covers a lot of ground during games and provides his back-four with plenty of protection. He’s also fairly effective when in possession. If you saw him in action for Germany against Brazil during this year’s World Cup campaign (a 7-1 victory), I’m sure you’ll agree with me.

At 27-years-old, Sami Khedira should now be enjoying the best years of his playing career. Now looks like the right time to swoop in and snap him up.

As it happens, The Gunners are quite well placed to do exactly that. His Real Madrid contract will expire at the end of the season, making him available as a free agent. If Madrid wish to cash-in on him whilst they still can they may well be willing to complete a cut-price January deal.

That must be Arsene Wenger’s thinking. Let’s just hope he’s able to guide a deal to completion this time around.

What’s your take? Should Arsenal still be interested in signing up Sami Khedira?
